Liferay and Vaadin Announce New Partnership

Open Source technology leaders collaborate to provide enterprises richer user experience.

Liferay, Inc., provider of leading open source enterprise portal and collaboration software, and IT Mill Ltd., provider of the Vaadin rich user interface library, recently announced a new technology partnership. The collaboration will simplify and reduce the cost of developing sophisticated and secure rich user interfaces for Liferay-based enterprise applications.

”Liferay has become the leading independent, open source platform for building web applications to solve business problems in many industries,” said Joonas Lehtinen, CEO of IT Mill. “This is not surprising as its combination of an extensible, feature-rich platform and business-friendly licensing is unmatched in the market. We look forward to partnering with a team that shares our dedication to usability and has the enterprise market footprint to maximize the impact of Vaadin technology.”

Usable enterprise web applications have traditionally been difficult to develop because of a lack of standards support across browsers, the concentration of enterprise resources in Java development capabilities, and the security risks of other rich UI approaches. With Liferay and Vaadin, however, enterprises can develop secure, maintainable solutions that work like desktop applications to increase productivity and user adoption.

As a result of the partnership, the Vaadin library will be bundled with future Liferay software releases and be used to create rich interfaces for existing Liferay functionality such as webmail, content management, collaboration, and social networking. Developers will be able to take advantage of integrated tooling for Eclipse and use Vaadin components when creating new Liferay applications.

In its tenth year of development, Liferay Portal has been recognized for its innovation and enterprise market penetration, receiving many industry accolades including inclusion as a Visionary in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Horizontal Portal Products.

The Apache-licensed Vaadin is based on Google Web Toolkit technology, but differentiates itself with a robust, secure and easy-to-use server-side development model. With Vaadin, developers can utilize AJAX without knowing HTML or JavaScript or requiring users to install any browser plug-ins.

”We have used many great tools for creating AJAX-enriched web applications,” said Brian Chan, Liferay’s Chief Software Architect. “However, Vaadin is unique in taking a Java-friendly approach to help companies use existing engineering resources to create enterprise-worthy applications that are secure and easy to use.”
